The Advantages of Using Open Source Software in your Web Site

Open Source Software uses coding in the public domain.  It offers liberal rights normally reserved for copyright holders provided under a software license that permits users to use, change, and improve the software and redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.  What this means for you the end-user is that you get software for your website that's been thoroughly tested by hundreds of thousands of users, is easy to edit, and less expensive than a custom built alternative.  There is open source software available for almost every application available.  This has resulted in a savings of over $60 billion per year to consumers.

Some examples of open source software that are in wide use today are Joomla, WordPress, Drupal, Website Baker and many others which we offer to our clients.  Most are quite flexible because they use "modules" that can extend their use beyond the basic application. Think of website software as the studs and foundation of the site.  Some of the modules availble to extend the use of your site include forums, photo galleries, email marketing, and more - it's actually quite endless. Most have content management capabilities available so you can do your own updates to your site as well.

How it works:  First your web developer must determine the best software for your needs - based on your hosting, programming languages, and a myrid of other indicators.  Once we've determined what will work best for your application, we search for modules that can extend your website in the direction you want to go.  We then create a custom designed "Template" for the future site. The new design is tested to make sure all the modules will work with it, and that there are no unanticipated bugs. This is the most timeconsuming phase unless you need some custom programming added because no module exists for your needs.  Testing is done an then your content is added. Finally, everything is moved to your hosting and tested in real time. 

Once your site is up and running it's just a matter of occasional bug fixes and updates - brought about by the software being made bullet-proof by thousands of testers world wide.  Open source software incorporates some of the most secure, well built and thought out underpinnings of websites in the world - built by the best and the brightest programmers out there....
