Some folks need a life - go to www.dealcatcher.com - which is done by folks that have nothing better to do than scour the Internet for sales...which of course is good for us because the holidays are approaching!

Travelers...www.seatguru.com lets you know if your plane seat has extra legroom or a power port, or is too close to the john.... for that trip to Mom's for turkey.

In case you missed it last year - the Christmas Lights Video - if this doesn't get you fired up for the holidays, nothing will.

Throw out those old encyclopedias gathering dust - there's www.wikipedia.org - a citizen-written encyclopedia with entries you'll never find in Britannica.

Learn about the History of Thanksgiving - find out what they REALLY had for the first Thanksgiving dinner.  An interesting documentary video about Mayflower myths and the first Thanksgiving.

Get Holiday ringtones for your mobile phone at Funmobile! Search for "Christmas" in the product search box.

Prefer to be a Grinch for the holidays?  Try the Dr. Seuss Parody Page and you'll have to smile

Designing a website yourself with a do-it-yourself editor -- keep these pitfalls & good practices in mind when you use an online editor or free hosting with a site builder....

1. Keep it neat and organized
2. Use lots of "white space" - don't overwhelm
3. Avoid too many banners and advertisements
4. Give away freebies or free information
5. Use paid hosting for a business site - it's better, no banners, and won't shut your site down just as it's gaining speed.  Free is OK for personal sites, but never for a business site.
6. Write articles - lots of articles about your areas of expertise
7. No blinkies - I repeat - NO BLINKIES (not only are they annoying. but blinking at a certain hertz has been shown to cause seizures in some people with epilepsy)
8. No freaky backgrounds - and make sure the text has enough contrast with the background.
9. Test your pages in various browsers - even editors like Front Page are not reliable in browsers other than Internet Explorer.
10. Avoid templates - a simple custom site is really better than a huge site done with a template.  Do you really want evil twins all over the Internet? A porn purveyor or a competitor could use the same template.
11. Understand your standings in search engines will likely be terrible. Free hosting and free editors for build-it-yourselfers have a vested interest in making sure the search engines don't find you (it would use their precious bandwidth among other things).
12. If they allow you to use your own editor, it's likely you'll have to upload files one by one - this is by design so that your site stays small and doesn't take up too much space.
13. Make sure the editor provided does not hide all the html.  This is what search engines look for and if it's not there, there is NOTHING you can do about it.  All the submissions in the world will not get you on Google or anything else.

6 ways people find your website....

1. With keywords embedded in your text - search engines use these to log and categorize your site.

2. Advertising - pay per click, on a billboard, magazine ads and other traditional advertising methods.

3. Links from Other Websites

4. Email advertising campaigns

5. Search engine submissions

 6. Word of mouth - yep, same as in "real life"

* This isn't exactly a hosting/domain deal - but everyone needs a good Internet provider at a reasonable price.  Right now there are some real bargains for Internet Service out there - both Comcast  and Charter High Speed Internet have $99/month deals for phone, high speed internet and TV packages.  If you're still into dial up - consider Copper.net - only $8.95/month if you pay yearly (and their service is waaaaay above AOL!) *

The Blue Screen of Death...STOP 0x000000000??

You know that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach... You have just finished that long, complex project that will take hours to recreate, you go to hit the save button and suddenly your computer goes belly-up - you get a blue screen (aka the "blue screen of death") with a cryptic STOP error like 0x0000000019.  What does it mean? Is my computer DEAD? Sometimes it seems that way because often even if you restart, you STILL get the bluescreen of death.  So how do you fix it? What caused it?  The answer is in that number at the end of the STOP 0x0000 number.  Write it down then find another computer to access the internet.

Stop errors can be caused by many things, from corrupted drivers to power surges that corrupt data. An excellent place to look up stop errors is WSC. You can also find good information in Microsoft's Knowledge base.  By looking up the error you can find out if it is a corrupted video driver, missing file, or some other problem and  how to fix it. Find the error's description then do a search in Google for an explanation. Sometimes it's an easy fix - restart your computer in safe mode (reboot and tap F8 for most computers) - and in safe mode roll back a driver or change a setting.  Sometimes it's not so easy and you'll want to call a professional (especially if the instructions you find tell you to repair the registry - a novice should NEVER make changes to the registry).

In all, it's usually fixable.  A blue screen is a serious problem, but it's almost always fixable without reinstalling Windows or wiping your hard drive clean - losing all your precious photos and data in the process. Having patience, a bit of sleuth, and a spare computer is all you need to discover and fix most blue screen problems.
